Message from the Professor Lyesse Laloui

I would like to welcome you to the Laboratory of Soil Mechanics. Beside the conventional geomechanical research activities, my research group gives priority to the protection of environment, landforms and structures from geo-hazards and industrial damage. Our experimental and modelling resources are mobilized to understand, describe and predict the environmental impact of the new technologies such as nuclear waste disposal, and to provide tools for the up-to-date design of the geo-structures.

Our consulting and research activities open continuously important scientific, technological and educational horizons.

Professor Lyesse Laloui
Director of the Laboratory of Soil Mechanics

Events :

  • Registration session for the "ALERT Local School 2010: Mechanics of Unsaturated Geomaterials" is open
The 2nd ALERT Local School organised by Prof. Laloui will take place between July 5th and 9th here at EPFL. On this occasion, several researchers and doctoral students will be welcomed to participate to the school which focuses this year on the mechanics of unsaturated geomaterials. The complete program and further details for the registration can be found on the web site.

  • Call for abstracts at the Geo-Frontiers 2011 for the session "Energy Foundations"
The session on energy foundations seeks to gather the state of advancement in knowledge in this challenging area. It will provide exchange ideas and know-how between practitioners and scientists, and offer debates on design, innovative construction methods and challenges, advanced modeling and monitoring.
Prospective authors are invited to submit a one page abstract of 200-300 words outlining the scope of their paper.  Abstracts are due by March 8, 2010. More details can be found here...

  • Invitation to the Minisymposium at the IV European Conference in Computational Mechanics
Within the 4th European Conference in Computational Mechanics of the ECCOMAS, Prof. Laloui coorganises a minisymposium entitled "Computational models and methods for multiphysics processes in geomaterials, biomaterials and other multiphase porous media".
The conference will be held in Paris, Mai 16-21, 2010. The deadline for the abstract submission is November 20, 2009. More details are available here...

  • First EPFL Doctoral Conference in Mechanics takes place on February 19th, 2010
PhD students from the Doctoral Program in Mechanics are organizing the first EPFL Doctoral Conference in Mechanics for PhD students in Switzerland and surrounding countries working on subjects related to different fields of mechanics, covering experimental, numerical, as well as theoretical aspects.
The keynote lecture will be held by Prof. Jean Salençon, President of the French Academy of Sciences.
