Message from the Professor Lyesse Laloui Our consulting and research activities open continuously important scientific, technological and educational horizons.
News:
Prof. Félix Darve of the Laboratoire 3S-R à Grenoble will spend 6 months here at EPFL. We are pleased to welcome him in our group.
Prof. Tomasz Hueckel of the Duke University (Durham, North Carolina) just arrived at the LMS for a stay of 6 months.
Research works of the LMS about Failure in multiphase geomaterials and Effective stress concept in unsaturated soils are focused on in the EPFL scientific highlights web page dedicated to all audiences. See the EPFL research page.
Dr. François Bertrand, former LMS PhD student, has received on the occasion of the 20th annual meeting of the ALERT Geomaterials Association, in Aussois (France) the Alert PhD Prize 2009 which awards the best European PhD thesis in Geomechanics. The ALERT Geomaterials Association is an EU Excellence Centre constituted by the best 24 European universities in Geomechanics.
Dr. Mathieu Nuth has been awarded the Chorafas 2009 Prize in the category "sustainability" for his PhD thesis entitled "Constitutive modelling of unsaturated soils with hydro-geomechanical couplings".
Thibaud Meynet has been awarded the Zanelli Prize "technologie et développement durable", for his Master thesis, carried out at LMS, about the geomechanical bio-improvement of soil.
The two following books are now available:
A special issue of Engineering Geology Journal (Vol. 109, 2009) entitled "Mechanics and Velocity of Large Landslides", edited by Ch. Bonnard, L. Laloui, C. Scavia and M. Castelli. A special issue of European Journal of Environmental and Civil Engineering (Vol. 13(7/8), 2009) entitled "Failure in Multiphase Geomaterials", edited by L. Laloui, F. Collin and V. de Gennaro.
The paper "Effective stress concept in unsaturated soils: Clarification and validation of a unified framework" by Mathieu Nuth & Lyesse Laloui is the TOP most-cited article in the International Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics (with the highest impact factor in the field).
Events :
The 2nd ALERT Local School organised by Prof. Laloui will take place between July 5th and 9th here at EPFL. On this occasion, several researchers and doctoral students will be welcomed to participate to the school which focuses this year on the mechanics of unsaturated geomaterials. The complete program and further details for the registration can be found on the web site.
The session on energy foundations seeks to gather the state of advancement in knowledge in this challenging area. It will provide exchange ideas and know-how between practitioners and scientists, and offer debates on design, innovative construction methods and challenges, advanced modeling and monitoring.
Prospective authors are invited to submit a one page abstract of 200-300 words outlining the scope of their paper. Abstracts are due by March 8, 2010. More details can be found here...
Within the 4th European Conference in Computational Mechanics of the ECCOMAS, Prof. Laloui coorganises a minisymposium entitled "Computational models and methods for multiphysics processes in geomaterials, biomaterials and other multiphase porous media".
The conference will be held in Paris, Mai 16-21, 2010. The deadline for the abstract submission is November 20, 2009. More details are available here...
PhD students from the Doctoral Program in Mechanics are organizing the first EPFL Doctoral Conference in Mechanics for PhD students in Switzerland and surrounding countries working on subjects related to different fields of mechanics, covering experimental, numerical, as well as theoretical aspects.
The keynote lecture will be held by Prof. Jean Salençon, President of the French Academy of Sciences. For registration and more information, go to the EDCM website. |
